ARSEN HARUTYUNYAN’S "KHOR VIRAP. THE HISTORY, MANUSCRIPTS AND LITHOGRAPHIC HERITAGE" IS PUBLISHED

Arsen Harutyunyan, "Khor Virap. The history, manuscripts and lithographic heritage," Yerevan, “Tigranes the Great,” 2017, 192 pages and 72 insert pages

The senior researcher of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography NAS RA and Mashtots Matenadaran and candidate of historical sciences Arsen Harutyunyan’s study "Khor Virap. The history, manuscripts and lithographic heritage" was published by the blessing of His Grace Bishop Artak Tigranian Dean of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, and by the compilation of Gevorg Ter-Vardanyan and Gagik G. Sargsyan. The first time in the book was gathered and completed the information stored in the bibliography about the monastery, as well as the lithographic protocols of monuments and manuscripts written in Khor Virap (also in Ahora).
In the first part of the study, the author presents the history of the monastery. The source sanctuary of Christianity, the monastery of Khor Virap had its unique role and meaning in almost all phases of middle ages. The preliminary information about the monastery is conveyed by Agathangelos, who is particularly describes the events of the adoption and dissemination of Christianity in Armenia and, in this context, also St. Gregory’s conduct and doctrine.
The ancient manuscripts reached us from Khor Virap belong to the 13th century and to the pens of Vardan’s pupils (New Julfa’s manuscript No 212, MM 3082).
In this work, the monastery's stone certificates stored on the walls of monuments, on the memorial stones and gravestones are concentred. On the basis of modern methods of lithography (picture writing, conventional signs of perusal, photo) about 70 registrations were examined, from which only 16 were previously published; thus, a large number of lithographs are put in scholarly circle the first time by reveling the names of Congregation members of the monastery, visitors-donors and others.
The book contains also the chronological book of monastery’s leader-abbots. The photo section includes also the scenes of torments of St. Gregory the Illuminator in Armenian miniature. The work also has indexes (names, places, subject lists), chronological charts of lithographs and manuscripts.
