THE LAUNCH OF “READINGS OF NAREKATSI” HAS STARTED

On September 22, at the Matenadaran were launched the first readings of Narekatsi which founded a new tradition and for opening it the honor was given to the devotees of Armenology Jean-Pierre Mahe and member of Mkhitarian Congregation, theologian and linguist Father Levon Zekiyan. They did large contribution and input for publicizing Gregory of Narek (Grigor Narekatsi) as thirty-sixth Universal Doctor of the Catholic Church.
“This phenomenon has Christian and cultural significance. It opens a new biogenic for assessment and reassessment of universal values, it injects fresh impetus nowadays of deprived souls, pushing the spiritual rapprochement and dialogue between peoples and cultures”, - in the opening speech marked the director of Matenadaran Hrachya Tamrazyan. Speaking about development of Narekatsi Studies, he noted that by crossing thousands of years it was summarized in 2003-2004 with celebrations and international conferences dedicated to 1000 anniversary of work “Matyan Voghbergutyan” (Book of Lamentations). The future years were so productive, that besides the published new monographs and scientific conferences the “Book of Lamentations” was translated into different languages. It was fully translated into French by Jean-Pierre Mahe, who marked in his speech, “The measure of Armenia should not be sized solely on geographic and economic weight, but the criteria of Narekatsi. From this point of view Armenia has the same level as the fatherlands of Shakespeare, Goethe or Hugo.”
“Readings of Narekatsi” will have free timetable and format, from separate reports to international conferences, forming a new tradition in the Narekatsi Studies.
Matenadaran’s Director Hrachya Tamrazyan also added that the Matenadaran after Mesrop Mashtots becomes the supreme center of Narekatsi Studies. “Finally, the majority of Narekatsi’s manuscripts and early printed books are gathered here, his huge heritage.”
After the event the participants attended the opening of the exhibition dedicated to Grigor Narekatsi’s bibliographical heritage. There are shown exclusively works of Narekatsi: the prayers, more than 50 manuscript exhibits, and the copies of different centuries of work “Book of Lamentations”, by the way, the “Book of Lamentations” after the “Gospel” is considered to be often copied and later published. There are shown old printed books, which also present works of Narekatsi, and also the translations of “Book of Lamentations” into different languages.
The exhibition is on the fourth floor of Matenadaran’s scientific building, in the temporary exhibition hall.
