“MASHTOTS” NEW FOUNDATION FOR THE PRESERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF ARMENIAN CULTURE HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED

Friends of Matenadaran, two Boston-based Armenian women, Maria and Beatrice Ghrdyans have established the “Mashtots” Foundation for the Preservation and Development of Armenian Culture at the initiative of the administration of the Matenadaran.
On 10 April, 2015 Director of the Matenadaran Hrachya Tamrazyan and the Foundation’s co-chairs Maria and Beatrice Ghrdyans signed an agreement on the establishment of the “Mashtots” Foundation for the Preservation and Development of Armenian Culture. The foundation paves new ways for further enlargement and development of the Matenadaran’s programs devoted to culture, science and education.
Some of the key objectives of the Foundation are to ensure, support and promote the implementation of scientific, creative and educational activities of young scholars, including PhD students and applicants, as well as engage young scholars in science, education and research.
“We’re happy to see young scholars actively involved in Matenadaran’s activities. We highly appreciate the work that you have done, and we cordially want to see this Foundation serve for the implementation of programs aimed at helping young scholars enrich their knowledge and acquire more skills,” said Beatrice Ghrdyan.
By the way, a year before in October 2014, Maria and Beatrice Ghrdyans donated a large collection of printed and manuscript books of their family, including five manuscripts, one of which is a Bible written in the 17th century and the other four were Arab-language manuscripts, as well as nearly 144 antique books that are primarily books written by 17th-18th century writers). Besides the rare books, the Matenadaran recently received two precious Armenian rugs of historical and cultural value that the Ghrdyans had donated to the Matenadaran. This major collection that has enriched the Matenadaran was granted to the Matenadaran by the Ghrdyans in memory of their prematurely deceased brother, Dr. Ruben Ghrdyan.
“Currently, the Matenadaran is carrying out several cultural, scientific and educational programs. Most of the scientific programs are being carried out by young experts. The number of young Armenian experts has grown quite a lot over the past years. Additional funding is needed in order to encourage them and provide them with guidance. In this sense, the establishment of this Foundation is becoming of importance. The Foundation will aspire to attract funds from other sources, including international donor organizations and individuals.
