NEW PUBLICATION

Komitas Vardapet: 1869-1935, photo album/research, by diligence of Gurgen Gasparyan, “Sargis Khachents – Printinfo”, Yerevan, 2014, 292 p.

  M. Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts Matenadaran published the second completed edition of “Komitas Vardapet: 1869-1935” photo album/research by diligence of Gurgen Gasparyan. In this publication, compared to the previous edition (Yerevan, 2009), is added a number of new documents and photographs about Komitas Vardapet’s (Archimandrite’s) life and activities, as well as, with a separate attachment, is presented a part of photos devoted to Vardapet.
The publication presents Komitas Vardapet’s photos of 1890-1935, that are classified in chronological order, and are specified a series of photographs’ dates and places. Most of Vardapet’s photos are kept in the Museum of Literature and Arts kept as in archives of Komitas Vardapet and as in archives of his contemporaries: Margarit Babayan; Spiridon Melikyan; Toros Azatyan and others. A series of photos are in different repositories as Mashtots Matenadaran, National Archive of Armenia, Nubaryan Library, as well as are scattered in various periodicals and journals. Their number, according to our calculations, passes a hundred, but the facts show that only a small part of Vardapet’s photos reached us.
Komitas Studies almost did not engage in the study of the great composer’s photos, which are important sources of his biography. That is why the various errors occurred in many different publications especially when the photos were dated and mentioned their places. Some of the mistakes were made in Paris by regulators of Komitas’s archive, who often dated the undated documents delivered to Armenia and noted on documents by their own handwriting. On April 11 (24), 1915, after arrest and exile of Komitas, his property and archives were robbed, and with many valuable works was disappeared his photo collection.
The study shows that in 1890-1900 Komitas Vardapet photographed especially in his life’s important places (when he graduated VI class of Gevorkian Theological Seminary, studied in Berlin, after awarding Pectoral Crosses from Khrimian Hayrik, and so on), and in his glory days after 1905 he photographed by request of his thousands of supporters and fans, because many people wanted to have the picture of favorite Vardapet.

In 1905-1915, when Komitas Vardapet diffused concerts and educational activities, a series of his photographs were copied and sold for charitable purposes, were printed on postcards with his image, and he encouraged such practice. In that period Vardapet’s photos have also been published in various newspapers and magazines.
In the studios of professional photographers of that time Vardapet photographed on several positions on the same day, by emphasizing especially the harmony of facial expression and body position. Most of the portrait – photos reached us by photographed several variants on the same day. Amateur photos are distinguished by the directness of character and discover some lines of Vardapet’s character. Each of them consigned us an episode and a moment of the great composer’s life. Most of this series of photos are published for the first time because in the various collections the publishers chose Vardapet’s portraits made in photo studios.
Related documents or photos are also classified in chronological order. For the presentation of the places were used the postcards that issued at the beginning of the 20th century.
Gurgen Gasparyan
