New Publication

The new study entitled “The Colophons of the Armenian Manuscripts” by Khachik Harutyunyan, senior researcher at Matenadaran, PhD in Philology, has been published. The editor of the book is Gevorg Ter-Vardanean, Head of the Manuscript Depository and the Department of Manuscript Study of Matenadaran, Doctor of Sciences (History). The study is dedicated to the widespread tradition of colophon writing in Medieval Armenian literature. The author examines the main components of the Armenian colophons, their various modes of expression, and their standard models. Many items have been compared with colophons in other manuscript traditions (Greek, Latin, Coptic, Syriac, Iranian, etc.), which further emphasize the distinct characteristics of the Armenian colophons.
Special importance is placed on the literary value and linguistic features of the Armenian colophons. The history of collecting and publishing them is also detailed. The book is intended for codicologists, medievalists, source critics, philologists, art critics, and those who are interested in the history of Armenian writing.
“The Colophons of the Armenian Manuscripts” is Khachik Harutyunyan’s second monograph. The first is entitled “Two 17th-Century Scribes Named Michael.” In the series “Medieval Armenian Authors,” he has prepared with introductions the critical texts of the hymns (sharakans) written by or attributed to the Catholicoi of All Armenians Petros I Getadardz and Nerses IV the Gracious (Shnorhali).
