THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEN AREVSHATYAN’S BIRTH

Today, the opening ceremony of the international conference dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of Academician Sen Arevshatyan, the long-serving director of Mesrop Mashtots Matenadaran (1982–2007), took place in the conference hall of the research institute (see the program).
In his opening speech, the Director Vahan Ter-Ghevondyan stated: “Not only in the academic circles but also among the common people in Armenia and the Diaspora, Sen Arevshatyan has long been regarded as the model permanent guardian of our invaluable manuscripts and profound researcher in Medieval Armenian literature. In the people's consciousness, his dignified and respected image has merged with the concept of Mesrop Mashtots Matenadaran.” Furthermore, Ter-Ghevondyan emphasized that “besides respecting the memory of the eminent academician, the long-serving director of our research institute, and the worthy Armenian, we aim to draw once again Armenian and foreign scholars’ attention to Medieval Armenian philosophy, to unite under the roof of Matenadaran the last decade’s researchers in this sphere, to discuss the results of their studies, and, finally and most importantly, to seek and find young researchers capable of entering this difficult but also attractive field and becoming the worthy continuators of Academician Sen Arevshatyan’s work.”
Welcoming speeches were delivered by Radik Martirosyan, the President of the National Academy of Sciences of theRA, and Lilit Ghazanchyan, the Director of the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology, and Law. Priest Asoghik Karapetyan conveyed the welcoming speech of His Holiness Garegin II, the Catholicos of All Armenians, to the participants of the conference.
The purpose of the conference is to appraise once again the significant contribution of the renowned scholar to the study of medieval philosophy and to the development of Matenadaran as a research institute. The conference papers are dedicated to Medieval Armenian philosophy, history, and culture. Distinguished Armenian and foreign scholars are taking part in it.
The conference will last for two days (May 22–23).
